Obituary

Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret Adam, 95, of Marshall, will be held Monday, November 30, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. A livestream of the service will be available at www.horvathfuneralservice.com by clicking the "Watch Webcast" link under the Photos and Videos tab above. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at St. Clotilde Catholic Cemetery in Green Valley. Mask and social distancing requirements will be observed at all services.

Margaret Mary (Lemahieu) Adam was born on May 3, 1925, in Vlamertinge, Belgium, to Julius and Maria (Vanlede) Lemahieu. Margaret grew up on a farm near Vlamertinge. In the midst of World War II, she fled with her family to France for a short time as the Germans moved through Belgium. Margaret returned to Belgium, where she married Maurice Adam on April 27, 1949. In May of 1949, the couple boarded a cargo ship to America. Margaret’s aunt and uncle sponsored their arrival to Marshall, where they lived for a time before beginning farming near Cottonwood. The couple moved their family around southwest Minnesota every few years until moving to Granite Falls in 1981.

Margaret was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an excellent cook who made sure no one ever left her home hungry. She enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. Margaret also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, especially while playing cards. Her Catholic faith was very important to her. Following Maurice’s death in 1998, Margaret moved to Marshall in 2006.

Margaret died on Thursday, November 26, 2020, at Avera Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She is survived by her children Mary (Darrell) Sunvold, Jeanne (Marvin) Louwagie, Marlene Adam, and Steven (Deb) Adam; daughter-in-law Pam Adam; grandchildren Lloyd (Keri) Sunvold, Keith (Tracy) Sunvold, Christy (Mark) Owens, Byron (Keisha) Louwagie, Rick (Kim) Louwagie, Jackie (Cory) Forcelle, Kerry (Kelly) Louwagie, Kimberly (Derrick) Ochsendorf, Angela (Taylor) Benson, Chris (Mackenzie Schram) Adam, Alyssa (Michael) Hammerschmidt, Andrea (Erik) Wieneke, Miranda (Kellie) Hensley, and Ashley Adam; 31 great-grandchildren; sister Madeleine Lemahieu; brother-in-law Roger Adam; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Maurice, son Mark, brother Oscar, and sisters Jeanne and Maria.

Our sincere condolences to the family of Margaret Adam. Our family shared many, many wonderful memories while growing up. Although I am the youngest of the Samyn family, I have vivid memories of many family get-togethers and of staying with Margaret & Maurice while our parents went to Belgium...I believe it was Joel and I. It was the next best thing to being with our real parents, they were kind and generous and that memory will stay with me forever. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all...
Sincerely,
Marlene (Molly) & Dave Andresen

Thanks Molly and Dave. I to remember quite well the time you and Joel stayed with us while your parents went to Belgium. I remember the excitement for having two younger children in our home. I believe neither of you were in school yet.

We are so sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I have so many great memories of Margaret, because she was such a big part of our Belgian family. She was a fabulous cook and I still make mashed potatoes just like she did. I believe our parents are all gathered around the card table again dealing out the cards. We will not be able to attend Margaret's service because of Covid, but will be there in Spirit. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Margret was amazing woman, she taught me some prayers. She would talk about her family with me. We enjoyed a lot of laughs together in the years we have known each other. She will be dearly missed and loved. She will always be an angel with me, I will remember our talks we enjoyed and our prayer time.
