Obituary

Edward “Ed” Bernard Buysse was born to Charles and Mary (Bot) Buysse on March 27, 1934 on the family farm in Westerheim Township, MN. He attended country school before graduating from Minneota High School in 1951 and continued his education by attending St. John’s University. He enlisted into the United States Army from 1955 to 1957 before being honorably discharged and then returned to Minneota to continue farming with his family.
Ed met the love of his life, Elaine Hourscht. They were married on September 11, 1965 and had four children: Marcia, Monica, Bonnie, and Craig. Ed and Elaine created a home together and farmed on the homestead of Ed’s parents. Continuing his family’s farm was a source of personal pride for Ed. In 1985, he began to work as a rural letter carrier for the United States Post Office. For over 20 years neither snow, rain, heat, nor gloom of night stopped Ed from delivering the mail to the residents of Lyon County. In July of 2008, Ed sold the family farm and moved to Ghent, MN. In Ghent, Ed was able to enjoy life in town and tend to his tomatoes and garden.
Ed harbored a love for music since he was a boy. With his brothers Clarence and Harold, and cousin Louie Wyffels, they started the “Any-Timers Band”, and played at many barn dances and local nursing homes over the years. Ed was especially fond of sports and was a die-hard Gophers fan, as well as the #1 grandkid-fan, always asking how his grandkids were doing in sports, and in life. Family was Ed’s top priority, and he maintained strong connections with them by organizing family gatherings, and by earning a place as one of the favorite uncles to his nieces and nephews. The most prominent memory Ed’s family has, was when Ed would pull out his accordion and start to play all the old polka, waltzes, and Christmas songs for them.
In addition to his family, Ed had many friends in his small community, and he enjoyed drinking coffee with them at the Ghent Town Hall declaring, “we almost solved all the world’s problems.” He also had a sharp mind for playing cards and was willing to watch any sport on TV with his family. Kind and dedicated to his family, loving and tirelessly working to provide for them, Ed will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Edward B. Buysse died on Friday, November 8, 2019, at the age of 85 years old. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elaine; children, Marcia (Kris) Brusven of Cottonwood, Monica (Glenn) Appel of Marshall, Bonnie Haugen of Ghent, and Craig (Tricia) Buysse of Alexandria; ten grandchildren, Ben Haugen of Sioux Falls, Kayla (Kevin) Peterson of Luverne, Zach (Rochelle) Brusven of Cottonwood, Cole (Taylor) Brusven of Canby, Jamie Appel of Marshall, Brandon Appel of Marshall Leah Brusven of Cottonwood, Rachel Brusven of Cottonwood, Madeline Buysse of Alexandria, and Ethan Buysse of Alexandria; three great-grandchildren, Logan Peterson, Addilyn Peterson, and Lincoln Brusven; brothers, Clarence (Barb) Buysse of Minneota and Donald (Patricia) Buysse of Maryland PA; sister-in-law, MaryAnn Buysse, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Mary; sister, Agnes Buysse; brothers, Barney, Harold, and Emil Buysse.
